Ok, so we may have made that word up. But on a serious note we do believe in doing our bit for people and the planet. That’s why we use oats. The greatest grain for tastier and creamier milk, and a greener grain for the planet.

Oats are one of the greenest grains when it comes to alternative milks. We knew that instinctively from seeing them grown around us and consuming them all our lives, but wanted to get the numbers to confirm our instincts.

So, we headed off to the library, with our best highlighter and reading glasses in hand.

We came across the work of two researchers from the University of Oxford and Agroscope who looked at the environmental impact of food produced from 38,000 farms¹!

What they found is that oats are one of the greenest grains, with a consistently low requirement across their land use, water use, eutrophication and GHG emissions compared to dairy and other alternative milks. That gave us the confidence that we can stand over our product as a genuinely sustainable drink!

Our oats - Some of the lowest-carbon oats on the planet. Measured, not marketed.

Plenty of brands talk a good game on sustainability. We'd rather show you the numbers.

Every drop of Oatier starts with 100% Irish oats from an Irish farmer-owned co-op. And here's the thing about Irish oats: they don't just grow well here, they grow greener here. Our temperate climate, plentiful rain and rich soil produce high-yielding crops without forcing the land - and higher yields mean less carbon per oat.

But we don't expect you to just take our word for it. The farmer owned co-op teamed up with Teagasc, Ireland's agriculture and food development authority, to carry out Ireland's first carbon footprint study of commercially grown Irish grain - a full Life Cycle Assessment, from seed to farm gate, built on data from the grower's farms.

The results? The carbon footprint of the Irish oats in Oatier is among the lowest in the world:

  • 207kg of CO₂ per tonne of oats - roughly half the footprint of oats from major producers like Finland and Canada, and around a third lower than oats grown in the UK.
  • And our farmers aren't stopping there. Through regenerative farming practices like returning straw to the soil, cover crops and crop rotation, carbon gets locked back into the land - bringing some of the farms close to net zero.

So when we say Oatier is made from some of the greenest grains going, that's not a slogan. It's science, done in Ireland, on Irish farms, by the people who grow our oats.

The climate and rainfall in Ireland is ideal for growing our oats, but what about the packaging Oatier® comes in?

Our cartons are made from 88% plant based materials, the cardboard used is Forest Stewardship Council certified, and we’re also Carbon Trust certified for helping to reduce the carbon footprint of our packaging by 21% over conventional alternatives.

That little cap at the top of the carton, that we always feel guilty about when trying to reduce our plastic, well that’s made from Bonsucro certified sustainable sugarcane, so that’s one less thing to worry about.

We’re on a journey to get better every day, and are working towards becoming a certified B-Corp, and a carbon neutral company.
